AV-8B Harrier

An AV-8 Harrier launches from the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the continuing war on terrorism. Bataan and her embarked Marines are components of Amphibious Task Force East (ATF-E). The ship and crew left Norfolk, Va., for an unscheduled deployment in support of the global war on terrorism. HMM-264 is part of the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) embarked aboard USS Iwo Jima. The AV-8B II is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft utilized by the Marine Corps. The primary mission of the Harrier is to provide responsive close air support for ground forces. This single-piloted, advanced V/STOL aircraft can operate from short fields, forward sites, roads and surface ships providing minimum response time to targets.
